The Stone Floor
At one time there were three sets of stones in the mill but it is unlikely that there was ever enough wind to power all three sets at once. Today only two sets survive, a pair of Derbyshire Peak stones and a pair of French Burr stones. The Peak stones are not used and the wooden casing has been partly removed (right) to allow visitors to see the stones more clearly.

| The Burr stones are the hardest and, wind permitting, grind wheat (the hardest grain) to produce wholemeal flour (left). This can be purchased in our shop on the ground floor as well as a book of suitable recipes for bread andcakes. |
Power to drive the stones comes from the great spur wheel which has 120 wooden teeth, while the cast steel stone nuts (on right) have 33 teeth. This helps to evenly distribute the wear.
