A Tour of the Mill

Section through Mill

The Cap

Looking up into the cap, you can see the wallower and sackhoist. A pull on the rope which runs down through all floors of the mill raises the sackhoist and engages the friction drive with the underside of the wallower, causing the chain to be wound up, thus enabling sacks of grain to be raised by wind power to the bin floor near the top of the mill.

Wallower

Brake wheel

Above and behind the wallower and taking up most of the space in the cap, you can see the brake wheel, so called because the horseshoe-shaped brake clamps around it. The brake wheel is mostly of steel but the teeth are wooden (applewood or hornbeam) so that if one breaks, it can easily be replaced without having to remove the whole brake wheel for repair.
