A Tour of the Mill

The Meal Floor

MillingThis is the floor where the miller would have worked and controlled the milling operation. The flour from the stones on the floor above drops down via wooden or cloth chutes into the meal bins on this floor. Outside on the staging, the shutters on the sweeps can be opened or closed to adjust the speed of the sweeps. Once stationary, the brake can be applied, eg when shutting down at the end of the day.

Tentering gearAbove the miller's head is the tentering gear with centrifugal governors (painted red). This equipment compensates for fluctuation in windspeed by adjusting the gap between the stones, maintaining a consistent quality of flour.
