Cranbrook Union Mill has patent sweeps with moveable shutters, operated by a chain which hangs down to the staging from the rear of the cap. When the chain wheel turns, a rack and pinion gear moves a pushrod through the hollow windshaft to operate the spider
, thus opening or closing the shutters.
